Paws flying, boundless energy – that adorable puppy greeting can quickly turn into a muddy mess on your clothes or a toppling act for unsuspecting guests. While jumping might seem cute now, it can become a real problem as your pup grows. Let’s help you stop your puppy’s jumping.
This is written for puppy owners who want a furry friend with manners, not muddy paw prints. We’ll explore why puppies jump and equip you with training techniques to keep all four paws on the ground.
Why Do Puppies Jump?
Jumping is a natural way for puppies to greet the world. They use it to get attention, show affection, or simply because they’re excited. But for us humans, it’s not always convenient (or clean!). However, you stop your puppy’s jumping.
Teaching Calm Greetings
The key to stopping jumping is to teach your puppy a more appropriate way to say hello. Here are some effective training methods:
- The Power of “Sit”: If your puppy already knows the “sit” command, use it! It’s a great way to redirect their excitement and make jumping physically impossible. Reward them with a treat or praise when they sit calmly. If your puppy doesn’t know sit check out this video.
- “Good Stay”: Teach your puppy the “stay” command. When someone arrives, ask your pup to stay and reward them for keeping all four paws on the floor. This teaches them patience and appropriate greetings.
- Ignore the Upward Impulse: Sometimes, the best response is no response. When your puppy jumps, completely ignore them. No eye contact, no petting, no talking. This might take some repetition, but eventually, your pup will learn that jumping doesn’t get them what they want. Make sure you reward the good behavior for best results with this technique.
- Reward Good (Calm) Behavior: When your puppy greets you calmly, click and treat. You can also calmly pet or praise your pup. Too much excitement may encourage those jumps again! Reinforcing the desired behavior makes your puppy more likely to repeat calmness.
Remember: Consistency is key! Make sure everyone interacting with your puppy uses the same training techniques.
