Many of us yell at our dogs and we think this is the best way to get our dogs to listen. This fortunately doesn’t have to be the case. Your dog can listen to a command that is given in a happy voice. How do we get our dog’s to listen and be calm at the same time during our dog training? Salt Lake City is a place where you can create this!
1.) Remember your dog is learning too. Your dog may not always listen the first time you ask him to do a new command. Overtime he will respond faster to a command with proper dog training.
2.) Pay attention to consequences. Do you reward your dog for not listening to you? Do you get more angry? Your dog wants to please you and will if you give him happy consequences for listening to you. Give your dog a treat and some praise for good responses.
3.) Say the command a maximum of 1-2 times. If you haven’t gotten a response by the second time figure out how to make the situation easier for your dog. Lesson the amount of distractions by moving away from them or moving to an easier environment. Go back and re-train the command. If your dog doesn’t do what you ask he really doesn’t understand what you are wanting him to do.
4.) Pay attention to your body language. Are your body movements prompting your dog to listen to you? If dog is about to break a stay, do you move into your dog’s space? If your dog is pulling on the leash, are you changing directions? If you ask your dog to “leave it” while he is on leash and he doesn’t do it, are you backing up to prompt him? Your body language needs to communicate what you want your dog to do in dog training. Salt Lake City gives you plenty of opportunities to practice this.
Remember patience and practice are ingredients in successful dog training. Salt Lake City is full of dog lovers that would love to see your dog being obedient while you are being calm.
